It’s October, and Halloween is right around the corner. Spooky makeup looks are the norm this month, but you’ll want some SFX supplies to make your wounds look a bit more realistic than red eyeshadow and ketchup. Here are some halloween makeup essentials from Amazon, just in time for trick-or-treating!
*WARNING*
There are example images in this article that might not be suitable for all audiences. By reading this article, you are consenting to see realistic looking SFX that might be a bit scary!
Why should you get Halloween makeup essentials from Amazon?
- It’s less expensive than most box stores and Halloween outlets (Small paints for $5 each? No thanks!)
- Free shipping! (Don’t have Prime? Get a 30-day free trial here)
- Larger selection of items
Multifunctional Face Paints
Face paint is a great way to create bold makeup looks. The colors in these flash palettes can be mixed to create the perfect color for whatever look you’re working on!
This 12-shade face paint kit is oil based, meaning it will stay on all night. Here’s a tip: you’ll also want an oil based makeup remover to take it off.
To apply your face paints, you’ll need some brushes. An inexpensive set of flat brushes in a large variety of sizes is perfect for costume makeup! Check out these brushes if you need some extras. Use dish soap to clean them afterwards to break down the oil!
Here’s a cool example of what you can do with face paints:

Mehron is one of the leaders in specialty makeup. It’s used on sets and for SFX for haunted houses, too!
If you want to be a skeleton, I would definitely recommend grabbing a tube of white paint to make your job easier. Alternatively, “clown” makeup would do the trick. Don’t forget the ultra white setting powder to really lock in your paint.
Mehron has a large range of colors available, for any costume you’re imagining. If you’re looking for it, you can get it – or you can mix two together to make a custom shade.

Fake Blood and Wounds
If you’re trying to be extra spooky with SFX this halloween, you’ll need some serious supplies.
While you could try to use ketchup as fake blood, it won’t stay in place and you’re going to smell like a fast food restaurant. Opt for some super realistic looking fake blood from Mehron instead!
This coagulated blood is thick and perfect for creating fake wounds, cuts, scrapes, and burns.
If you’re going to the Halloween party as a crime scene witness, you may only want some blood splattering instead. Mehron has you covered here too, with blood splatter spray. It’s supposed to dry to the touch after a few minutes, but be careful where you spray it – you might stain your carpet!
Liquid Latex
In order to create fake scars and gashes, you’ll want to use liquid latex. By combining some materials you already have at home (like toilet paper and foundation to match your skin tone) you can make some crazy looking wounds.
Here’s what we mean:

Looks pretty real, right?

Watch out, it’s hunting season!
The examples get a lot more graphic that this, but we don’t want to scare you too much.

Temporary Tattoos
If you don’t want to go through the “pain” of liquid latex (or if your little one wants to be scary but still school-appropriate) you can grab some cool temporary tattoos.
These ones are zombie themed, and have a good range of gross looking cuts. Plus, they won’t break the bank. Win!
Kits
If you just want a little bit of everything and don’t want to bother buying individual supplies, a Halloween makeup kit might be the most convenient option for you!
Without a doubt, the kit from Mehron will have EVERYTHING you need, and you can be sure that you’re getting quality supplies, too.
Mehron also has smaller character kits that give you what you need to create one specific Halloween costume! These are a great one-stop kit to get just what you need for this year’s makeup.
